1920s in Clayoquot Sound

By the 1920s, a small but steady stream of European settlers had made their way to Clayoquot Sound. Stubbs Island is the site of one of the first settler communities known as Clayoquot, which is largely understood to be a anglicization of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth word Tla-o-qui-aht, which is the name of the First Nations who have inhabited this part of the world since time immemorial. Much of the early settlement was reliant on self-sufficiency due to the isolation of the area. It was accessible only by boat until 1959. This gallery features photos from Stubbs and other islands in the inlet that surrounds what is known today as Tofino or Načiks.
